Vic: Australian households to encouraged to donate organs

MELBOURNE, Feb 18 AAP - Every Australian household will be sent an organ donation consent
form as part of a new campaign to increase organ donation.

Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott announced the campaign at the launch of the Australian
Organ Donor Awareness Week in Melbourne today.

From April, every household will be sent a co-signed letter from the government and
the Pharmacy Guild inviting people to register their consent on the Australian Organ Donor
Register.

Mr Abbott said it was hoped the initiative would encourage more organ donation, with
Australia having one of the lowest rates of donation in the world.

"The problem at the moment is that our organ donation rates are very low," he said.

"Ours and New Zealand's are the lowest in the world at about 10 donations per million a year."

The initiative follows a decision by health ministers last month to change the Australian
Organ Donor Register to a register of consent, rather than intent.

Under the new arrangements, clinicians will not need to seek families' consent when
a person has registered legally valid consent through the register.

Close to 20,000 Australians are waiting for an organ transplant at any time.

In 2004, there were 218 Australian organ donors from whom 783 people received transplants.

Donors included cricketer David Hookes who died in January 2004.

His wife Robyn Hookes and several of Australia's sporting elite including close friend
of David, Shane Warne, were at the official launch.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has agreed to use $6 million of Australian government
funds from The Third Community Pharmacy Agreement for the new registration brochures and
the letters.

AAP General News (Australia)

VIC:Pricklyback crayfish off the menu

MELBOURNE, April 12 AAP - The `pricklyback' crayfish has gone off the menu and onto
the endangered list.

Once threatened by over-fishing, the survival of the Glenelg Spiny Freshwater Crayfish
is now at the mercy of drought, land clearing and salinity which have caused long-term
declines in their habitat.

Unlike yabbies, the crayfish known as `pricklyback' is off limits for fishing and now
definitely off the menu after being recently added to the endangered list.

Victoria's Department of Sustainability and Environment welcomed the listing of the
Glenelg spiny crayfish, which is found only in southwest Victoria and southeast South
Australia.

DSE biodiversity officer Jodie Honan said the listing followed continuing research
and conservation work, after concerns over over-fishing were first raised in the 1980s.

She said a series of size limits, bag limits and closed seasons were initially imposed
to reduce fishing pressure, while the pricklyback was taken off the menu in Victoria several
years ago.

"Since 2010 fishing for the species has been prohibited in both Victoria and South
Australia because of habitat loss and sustainability concerns," Ms Honan said on Tuesday.

Land clearing, salinity and changes in land use had caused long-term declines in their habitat.

Drought conditions had dried some former habitats while bushfires and landslips had
affected important catchments, increasing concerns about the species' survival, the DSE
said.

Ms Honan said the Glenelg spiny crayfish, which is slow-growing and has long lives,
are easy to distinguish from yabbies by their spines and bumps on their large claws and
bodies.

VIC:Police alert for Chaouk revenge

AAP General News (Australia)

VIC:Police alert for Chaouk revenge

By Steve Lillebuen

MELBOURNE, Aug 14 AAP - Police across the country are on alert for revenge attacks
after the slaying of Melbourne crime family patriarch Macchour Chaouk.

The highly charged feud between the Chaouk family and a rival clan has worried investigators,
who have notified both interstate and federal police agencies of a potential escalation
in violence.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Sir Ken Jones has called for calm and warned anyone
contemplating revenge in the wake of the Friday shooting that avengers will be caught.

"In relation to the death of Macchour Chaouk, Victoria Police continues to take active
steps in a number of Melbourne communities to guard against any risk of escalation," he
said in a statement.

"In this, Victoria Police is being actively assisted by federal and state law enforcement
agencies."

It's believed the Chaouks have links to Lebanese crime gangs in Sydney, while courts
have heard they have access to weapons and are involved in an "ongoing war" with the rival
Haddara family.

The Chaouk family has already vowed revenge for the death of its 65-year-old patriarch,
saying "the weak, dirty dogs killed him on Ramadan" in a statement obtained by The Age
newspaper.

"His blood does not come cheap, especially in Ramadan," it says.

A family spokesman told the newspaper: "Every dog has its day."

Macchour Chaouk was gunned down about 11am on Friday in the backyard of his fortified
Brooklyn home in Melbourne's west by a drive-by shooter.

His wife, another family member and three young children were home at the time and
ran to his side before he died minutes later.

The youngest of Chaouk's five sons, Omar, was embraced by a group of family and friends
outside the home following the shooting.

He is on bail after the seizure of guns, ammunition and blank passports at the home last month.

Detectives let Omar view his father's body for about 20 minutes after they had secured
the house with Special Operations Group officers.

Late on Friday police arrested a 57-year-old man in connection with Chaouk's death.

Homicide detectives will resume questioning the Altona North man on Saturday. He has
not yet faced an out-of-sessions court.

Hours after the Chaouk shooting, a shooting rampage tore up a pokies venue on busy
Lygon Street, sparking fears that revenge attacks had already begun.

Two men died in the shooting at Players on Lygon in Carlton while a suspect was quickly arrested.

He too is being questioned by detectives on Saturday.

Sir Ken said on Saturday that investigators had now completely ruled out any links
between the two shootings.

MELBOURNE, Dec 9 AAP - Two men who stole a pet dog and threatened to kill it unless
the owner gave them a gun have avoided jail.

Scott Wilson, 19, and Andrew Davidson, 47, stole a Maltese terrier called Kimba from
a Melbourne home in March and left a ransom note.

The note demanded Kimba's owner give them a hand gun and ammunition or the pooch would be killed.

Wilson, of Croydon, and Davidson, of Warrnambool, pleaded guilty to theft and blackmail.

Wilson also pleaded guilty to burglary.

Victorian County Court Judge Duncan Allen today ordered the pair to serve community

M2 PRESSWIRE-15 January 2001-MSN.CO.UK: MSN.co.uk welcomes increased interoperability as a result of AOL-Time Warner merger (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Commenting on the news, Geoff Sutton, Director of MSN.co.uk said: "We have always supported interoperability for Instant Messaging and will continue to do so until this solution is realised. Internet users want to exchange instant messages with each other, regardless of which service they use. We welcome the news that AOL will have to become a part of this open standard for Instant Messaging, it will be a big win for the users of all our services."

MSN Messenger Service has 24 million users world wide.

Although the FCC conditions surrounding the merger were less stringent than MSN had hoped, the announcement brings the industry one step closer to making open communication between all instant messaging services a reality.

Alan Neely, president and chief executive officer of InvoiceLink Corporation. "Wachovia's consultative approach in the corporate market will provide billers with an expert adviser in sorting through the cash management issues surrounding the various electronic bill presentment and payment models. We look forward to a long-term working relationship with Wachovia and welcome the opportunity to work together in delivering the right EBPP solutions for its client base."

InvoiceLink Corporation has pioneered a method for secure, Internet-based bill presentation and payment. The patent-pending application software places control in the hands of the biller, with payments handled by the biller's bank.

"InvoiceLink's innovative advancements in EBPP technology target bill distribution through Web portals and home banking sites. This is an exciting development in the EBPP market," said Douglas G. Hartsema, manager of Wachovia's Treasury Services Group. "Aligning InvoiceLink's electronic billing technology with Wachovia's cash management services such as online credit card authorization, ACH payment processing and lockbox services will provide billers a comprehensive electronic accounts receivable solution.

"Wachovia will work with InvoiceLink and our customers to introduce the electronic billing model to the customer's environment as a complement to the overall collection process."

InvoiceLink Corporation was founded in 1997 and is based in Greensboro, N.C. The company specializes in the delivery and support of application software for the rapidly emerging e-commerce and customer communications market. InvoiceLink products enable a company to remove paper from the billing process and communicate directly with its customers electronically with no third-party involvement. Customers receive bill notifications via e-mail that is linked to the billers secured Internet Web site. The company also provides innovative technologies for linking biller sites directly to Internet/banking portals. The company's patent-pending products allow a biller's customer to modify payment amounts, timing of payments and the source of payment (checking, savings or credit card).

Child abuser gets 25-year prison term.(Courts)(The defendant pleaded guilty to sex crimes committed against children ages 9 and 11)

Byline: Karen McCowan The Register-Guard

Correction (published July 8, 2011): Phillip Curtis Collicott was convicted of one count of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of first-degree sexual penetration and three counts of encouraging child sexual abuse. A City/Region story Thursday incorrectly said he was convicted of an additional count of sexual penetration and seven additional counts of encouraging child sex abuse. Also, Collicott was convicted in a stipulated facts trial, in which he acknowledged that the state had enough evidence to result in a conviction. The story incorrectly stated that he pleaded guilty to his offenses.

A 29-year-old Springfield man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing two children ages 9 and 11.

Phillip Curtis Collicott, 29, was sentenced under Oregon's version of Jessica's law, first passed in Florida after 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford Act was raped and murdered by a previously convicted sex offender in 2005. The law sets a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years for certain sexual offenses against children younger than 12.

Collicott pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, two counts of first-degree sodomy and 10 counts of encouraging child sexual abuse.

The latter counts arose from Collicott's downloading of child pornography from the Internet. Investigators found no evidence that Collicott recorded his abuse of the two children, Lane County Deputy District Attorney David Schwartz said.

Collicott's attorney, Janise Augur, said her client committed the crimes under the influence of "intense alcoholism and depression."

He had no previous criminal history, had been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, was active in the National Guard, and was "a good citizen when not using alcohol," she said after the sentencing.

Start spreading the news: 'word of link's power is like nothing we've experienced before. It's about how we pass along information, share ideas, and expand business in our digital times.'.(Links That Bind: Envisioning Connections)

Information, news, recommendations and yes, gossip, have always been spread by word of mouth. In the digital age when people share such things, the result is more immediate, expansive and powerful--and how it happens depends a lot less on conversation and more on the links we send. On Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn, the reigning method is "word of link," and this strategy also thrives in e-mails and on blogs and websites devoted to publishing news and journalism.

Those "share" buttons on stories and blog posts do get clicked.

Distribution--passing along what's of interest through personal networks--is only the beginning of our community-building impulse. Collaborative journalism happens with a click as readers, listeners and viewers enlist themselves to be ambassadors for those who report, write and produce the news.

How we function in digital communities isn't just changing journalism's ecosystem; it is having a profound effect on how business works--and this includes journalists.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

"At its core, social media requires that business leaders start thinking like small-town shop owners," Gary Vaynerchuk writes in his new book, "The Thank You Economy." "They're going to have to take the long view and stop using short-term benchmarks to gauge their progress. They're going to have to allow the personality, heart, and soul of the people who run all levels of the business to show."

If he's right--and I believe he is--radical transparency (yes, more radical than what's already happened) lies ahead for news companies and journalists. It will involve people covering real news that will be absorbed and shared by people with others they interact with in their various digital communities.

No more being disconnected--of "us" standing apart from "them."

Like Nothing Before

Word of link's power is like nothing we've experienced before. It's about how we pass along information, share ideas, and expand business in our digital times.

Consider Groupon, one of the fastest growing companies in the history of the Web. Absorb the fact that Groupon--the community gathering let's-make-a-deal approach to digital commerce--is on pace to pull in $1 billion in sales in record time. This company didn't start advertising outside of search engines until it had millions of users and had launched in dozens of cities. (Judging by the negative reaction to its Super Bowl ad this year that was probably a good idea.) Instead, Groupon grew from an e-mail listserv in Chicago to launches in Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. largely through word of link. Motivated to share the daily deal with friends, the customer base grew exponentially. Groupon estimates that more than half of its Web visitors come because of referrals from friends.

In the news business, few would have believed that a start-up would surpass The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post in unique Web users in less than five years. Yet that's what The Huffington Post did. With 17 million monthly unique visitors in March, this celebrity driven website had more traffic than the Journal and Post combined and at a price of $315 million it became the property of AOL earlier this year. Absent word of link, it's unlikely that Groupon or The Huffington Post--or Zappos or Pandora or many other digital start-ups--would have found such success so quickly.

The Referral Economy

City University of New York journalism professor Jeff Jarvis talks and writes about the "link economy," describing it as "the new currency of media." He refers to it as a "gift economy" in which "links are presents that can be given or earned but not bought."

Word of link is similar to this link economy, but it is grounded in social conventions that predate the Internet and the digital device known as links. While the link economy speaks more to the power of search algorithms and Google ads, word of link is more about the power of who is sharing the link and that person's relationship to the person or company behind the link. It's much like the product endorsement that comes from a trusted friend compared to one from a celebrity spokesperson on TV.

Research highlights a pattern that at first glance seems counterintuitive. Those who arrive at a news website because of a link posted on Facebook or Twitter are likely to stay longer and return more often than visitors who get sent there from a link found through a search engine. What is surprising about this finding is that readers who click on links from search engines are actively pursuing information, while those who get there via a social network are passive news consumers who are suddenly transformed into active ones.

The Q. and A. website Quora has been around since 2009. But last year, on the day after Christmas, the influential tech personality Robert Scoble wrote a post entitled, "Is Quora the biggest blogging innovation in 10 years?" During the preceding 10 months, Quora.com averaged 113,000 unique users per month, according to Compete. In the two months after Scoble's widely distributed post, which raced around the Web on Twitter, Facebook and blogs, Quora.com averaged 313,479 unique users.

Who shared a link makes the difference. Powerful referrals come with greater ease and frequency for news companies and journalists who have personal relationships with those whom New York University (NYU) journalism professor Jay Rosen calls "the people formerly known as the audience." And Seoble is one of the most well-connected and transparent reporters and bloggers of our time.

The average Facebook user has 130 friends and the average Twitter account has 300 followers. According to Vaynerchuk's math, that means one average user with accounts on both platforms has the potential to reach 7,740 people with a single message. That message could be a thumbs-up, one-word comment, like "interesting," and the link then piggybacks on that. Or the message could be critical or snarky, questioning the value or approach on coverage.

Authentic, personal interactions with journalists and news organizations transform passive members of an audience into active endorsers and distributors--even partners. NYU professor Clay Shirky talks about three elements that make social media powerful: the promise, the tools, and the bargain. Almost universally, news companies have made the promise of interactivity via social media by launching Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. Now the follow-through must be their use of these tools to stay true to the bargain--of maintaining genuine communication and connection.

They talk to you through their storytelling; the expectation is that you will talk back to them. And just as word of mouth worked better when deeper connections existed between those giving and receiving information, the same dynamic applies to word of link. What sets word of link apart is its accelerated speed, broader range, and potential for stronger influence.

The News Finds Me

When I'm visiting college students, I always ask where they get their news. Most shrug. I might as well have asked them where they get their food. "Everywhere," most respond. Another answer I get frequently--and it's worth remembering--is the notion that "if the news is important enough, it will find me."

Translated--if my friends think I should know, they'll tell me.

According to Facebook, the average user creates 90 pieces of content each month on the site. More than 30 billion pieces of content are shared each month, and much of that is what we call journalism. Certainly reporters want their work shared, but if they focus too much on what moves the quickest on social networks this could lead to a form of "link-bait" journalism. The audience is too smart for that; or, let's say many of us hope they are and will see through attempts to pander with sensational angles. Occasionally, of course, pandering will work, but over the long haul taking this route will damage the credibility of journalists and news organizations.

Weaving a community together is more than amassing huge numbers of Facebook fans and Twitter followers. It's a challenge of quality, not quantity. I'll take 100 people who feel they are partners rather than 1,000 followers who consider us a glorified headline service. We'll get better news tips, better feedback, and more evangelism from those 100 people--plus all those in their respective networks.

Small-town business owners rely heavily on word of mouth for marketing. By embracing this approach but with a new twist, those who gather and disseminate news will leverage word of link in ways that will expand their audience, improve their journalism, and grow their business.

LCNB Corp. Reports Financial Results for the Three Months Ended March 31, 2011.

LEBANON, Ohio -- LCNB Corp. (OTCBB: LCNB) today announced net income of $2,302,000 (total basic and diluted earnings per common share of $0.34) for the three months ended March 31, 2011. This compares to $2,212,000 (total basic and diluted earnings per common share of $0.33) for the same three-month period in 2010. The $90,000 increase in net income was due to a $753,000 increase in income from discontinued operations, net of tax, caused by the sale of LCNB's insurance agency subsidiary during the first quarter 2011. In late 2010, LCNB Corp.'s board of directors resolved to sell the insurance agency subsidiary and therefore its financial results are reported in the income statement as income from discontinued operations, net of taxes. The increase in income from discontinued operations reflects the gain recognized on the sale, less certain related closing costs, taxes, and a curtailment expense recognized in LCNB's nonqualified defined benefit retirement plan due to the sale.

Net income from continuing operations for the first quarter 2011 was $663,000 less than the first quarter of 2010 primarily due to a $531,000 increase in the provision for loan losses and a $519,000 increase in non-interest expense.

Net loan charge-offs for the first quarter of 2011 and 2010 totaled $374,000 and $146,000, respectively. Non-accrual loans and loans past due 90 days or more and still accruing interest totaled $3,670,000 or 0.79% of total loans at March 31, 2011, compared to $4,061,000 or 0.89% of total loans at December 31, 2010. The decrease was primarily due to the receipt of a guarantee payment on a Small Business Administration loan that had been classified as non-accrual at December 31, 2010. The provision for loan losses for the three months ended March 31, 2011 increased $531,000 over the comparative period in 2010 due to increased net charge-offs, troubled debt restructurings, and current economic conditions. Other real estate owned (which includes property acquired through foreclosure or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure and also includes property deemed to be in-substance foreclosed) and other repossessed assets totaled approximately $2,319,000 at March 31, 2011 and $2,114,000 at December 31, 2010. The increase was primarily due to inventory repossessed from a commercial borrower that ceased operations.

Net interest income for the first quarter 2011 was $82,000 less than for the comparable 2010 period primarily due to a reduction in general market rates. Non-interest income for the first quarter 2011 was $178,000 greater than the comparable 2010 period primarily due to increased gains from the sale of investment securities. Non-interest expense for the three months ended March 31, 2011 increased $519,000 from the comparative period in 2010 largely due to a $145,000 increase in salaries and a $139,000 increase in employee benefits.
