Fed: SAS will not shoot on sight Iraqi leaders - ADF

An Australian Defence Force spokesman says Australian troops will not shoot-on-sightIraqi leaders identified in United States playing cards.

US and British troops are to be issued with decks of cards carrying photographs of55 of the most wanted Iraqis with the order to capture or kill.

ADF spokesman Brigadier MIKE HANNAN says he doesn't know if Australia's 150 SAS troopsin Iraq have been issued with the cards.

But he says Australia's rules of engagement mean they cannot shoot on sight.

Brigadier HANNAN says the SAS role includes checking of vehicles and movement of suspiciousgroups.

He says if those checks turn up someone who's on the list, that person will be arrestedand taken into custody immediately.

Brigadier HANNAN says concerning whether Australian troops are authorised to kill someone, their rules of engagement allow them to defend themselves and their compatriots.

He says they don't attack people who pose no threat.
