ALBANY -- Police agencies honored a year's worth of courage and labor Thursday in ceremonies held to mark the end of Police Week.
For the State Police, the rainy day made history.
It was the first time a woman earned the division's highest honor for heroism, valor or outstanding performance: the Brummer Award.
State Police Investigator Joanne Leoni, 40, a 16-year State Police veteran who works in the Brewster station in Troop K, Putnam County, and last summer helped crack a string of nine armed robberies, is the first woman to win the honor in the award's 28-year history.
