Importer moves business from home to building

Since February a Bountiful man has worked from home importing scooters, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles from across Asia and selling them to 50 dealers across the United States. This week he's opening MG Imports/QJ Distributing in an 11,600 square foot warehouse in North Salt Lake, with plans to open a retail store there soon.

Co-owner Mark Jacobs spearheaded the effort between himself and five friends to launch a business importing and distributing products, particularly scooters and motorcycles. Impressed by economic growth in China, they made arrangements with 12 Asian factories. All products ship from China.

Jacobs said QJ's imports are like "the Hyundai and Kia of motorcycles," offering affordable quality.

"They're an inexpensive line of cycles that people can afford, that people like to be able to get because they're a good cycle and they're less expensive," he said.

MG/QJ, now located at 585 N. 700 W., also services and repairs the products and regularly adds more dealers. Jacobs said business has been "busy and crazy but good."

He hopes to supplement the current three full-time staffers by hiring new employees once MG/QJ opens as a retail store. For now Jacobs is fixing up the warehouse and adding offices. He's waiting for the summer recreation season to unveil the marketing campaign.
