There was a time when almost all baseball players had nicknames. Great ones had more than one, like the "Yankee Clipper," "Joltin' " Joe DiMaggio, or "The Splendid Splinter," Ted "Teddy Ballgame" Williams.

Vernon "Lefty" Gomez also went by "El Goofy." Charles Dillon Stengel is remembered by fans as Casey, or to a lesser extent "The Old Perfessor." But in his playing days he was called "Dutch."
