Qld; Oil spill on Gold Coast beaches kills fish and birds

The Gold Coast City Council says a trailer load of fish and around 20 birds were killed
by an oil spill off the Gold Coast this morning.

City Councillor DAPHNE MCDONALD says oil patches, each around the size of a compact
disc, have been found on beaches between Nobby Beach and the Seaway.

She says council staff have found about 20 dead birds and a trailer load of fish.

They're still cleaning up and expect the beaches will be cleared of oil tomorrow.

Councillor MCDONALD says the source of the spill is still unknown but one possibility
is that it was a discharge from a passing ship.

She says state government officials have taken samples of the oil and are investigating.
